In a market saturated with hyper-competitive shooters and sprawling open-world epics, there's something wonderfully refreshing about a game that just wants you to play with your food—or, in this case, squishy toys. Squishy Magic: ASMR Toy Maker from the indie studio Dramaton isn't trying to reinvent the wheel. It's the kind of game you pick up when you need a break, a little digital stress ball that lives in your pocket and demands nothing more than a few minutes of tactile, ooey-gooey fun. Before I dove in, the previews and trailers had already done their job—the hyper-satisfying visual of a knife slicing through a giant, fluffy pastel cake was enough to pique anyone's interest. It promised a low-stakes world where the only goal is to create, and honestly, that's exactly the vibe I was craving.
My first hour with the game was a process of pure discovery. You start with the basic tools—a dough-like base, a spray bottle to dampen it, a knife, and a few buckets of paint—and before you know it, you're crafting an intricate bear-shaped bust, complete with a glossy finish and a near-identical likeness to the reference picture. The core gameplay loop is deceptively simple: shape, spray, bake, and decorate. But the feel of it is where the magic lives. The haptic feedback on my controller was surprisingly nuanced, giving a subtle rumble when the "knife" hits the right layer of dough, and a satisfying "thwip" sound effect when you pull off a successful "decal" sticker. The learning curve is practically nonexistent, but mastering the fine details—like adding thin, delicate texture to a bunny's fur or getting the drip on a cake just right—becomes surprisingly deep. It's not a strategy game, but there's a puzzle in every model, a challenge of visualization and steady hands. The game's best trick is its "soak" function; you can make your creation glisten with water, and the way light reflects off the liquid surface, combined with the crunchy, squishy audio, creates an immersion factor that I haven't felt since playing PowerWash Simulator.
Compared to other "toy shop" or "simulator" games, Squishy Magic understands its audience better than most. It doesn't pad the experience with pointless dialogue or a convoluted story; it gives you a workspace and lets the ASMR do the talking. I've played similar titles like Tinkercad or even the Scribblenauts series, but nothing quite matches the tactile satisfaction here. The game rewards patience and precision with a flawless, high-gloss finish, and it never punishes you for making a mistake—you can just repeat the "squish" step, which is as fun to do as it sounds. The biggest triumph is that it has made me, a hardcore FPS player, happily log in every night for a "quick session" that ends up stretching for two hours. It's not about competition or progress bars; it's about the simple, meditative joy of turning a blob of digital putty into something cute and shiny, and that's a unique, addictive hook I haven't found anywhere else.
features
- 🧪 Squish Physics Engine: The most innovative feature. You can "squish" any part of your creation, which deforms the mesh in real time. It uses a soft-body physics engine that feels incredibly realistic. Poke your creation, and it jiggles, wobbles, and returns to its shape. It's not just a visual gimmick; it's the core interaction, enabling you to flatten and re-sculpt sections, which adds a layer of depth to the creation process.
- 🧰 Multi-Tool Complexity: You aren't just limited to a knife and spray bottle. There are realistic texture stamps, airbrushes for gradients, and a "sprinkle gun" for auto-decorating. Each tool has its own sound profile and haptic signature, making the UI toolkit feel like a real workshop. The tool switching wheel is snappy, and the combination of actions—like using a wet brush to "polish" a dry texture—creates new, unexpected results.
- 🎨 The "Glaze & Go" System: After baking, you can apply a variety of finishes—from matte to a mirror-like glossy resin. The "flaw-spotter" tool scans your model for imperfections, highlighting unsmoothed areas with a subtle orange glow. Fixing these flaws before applying the final glaze gives a tremendous sense of accomplishment and is your path to a perfect 5-star rating on each project.
pros
- 🌟 Satisfying Audio Design: This is the star of the show. The crinkles, squishes, and pops are distinct and clean. The rain-like sounds of the spray bottle and the scraping of the acrylic knife are pure ASMR gold. It's the reason I play with headphones on every single time.
- 🖱️ Zero Penalty Sandbox: The game encourages experimentation. You can never fail; you can only start over, and the undo mechanic is forgiving enough to try crazy things without fear. This makes it a perfect game for kids or for adults who want to unwind without the pressure of fail states.
- 🎮 Great Performance & UX: The menus are intuitive, load times are nearly non-existent, and the camera controls are fluid. It runs buttery smooth on PC and on the Steam Deck, which makes it a perfect "bedtime" game to unwind with. The photo mode for sharing your creations is also a lovely touch.
cons
- 📉 Repetitive Model Roster: While the toolset is deep, the catalogue of presets (bears, bunnies, cakes) is surprisingly small. After a few hours, you will have seen most of the base shapes, and the "new content" pace isn't fast enough to keep the novelty high for a hardcore grinder.
- 💬 Shallow Progression: There's no story, no shop to upgrade, and no unlockable tools based on skill. You get a flat fee for each creation, and the money only goes toward... more paint colors. While its minimalism is a plus for relaxation, it does feel like a missed opportunity to add a "collection" aspect or cosmetic upgrades for your workspace.
- 🎮 Controller Sensitivity: On console controllers, the camera acceleration is a bit twitchy when making fine adjustments. While this isn't a deal-breaker, it can be frustrating when trying to paint a tiny eyeball or apply a delicate texture, and it requires a few minutes of tweaking in the settings menu to feel right.
